Education Governance: Teaching Council Board Appointments
The Minister of Education will soon be considering appointments and the future needs of the governing board of the Teaching Council. The are currently advertising for up to 6 members appointed by the Minister of Education, including the Chair and Deputy Chair and this will close on 7 April. The current board will complete their terms on 30 June 2025 and a refreshed board will be in place in early July 2025 to serve a term of three years.
MILG have identified Uataki Mātauranga, Education Governance, as a key lever of influence to shape the educational experiences that improve outcomes for ākonga and whānau. We strongly advise iwi to submit nominations for these roles.
The Teaching Council’s purpose is to ensure safe and high-quality leadership, teaching and learning for children and young people. Its role is to ensure teachers are competent, fit to practice and accountable for the way they teach. It works with around 150,000 registered and certificated teachers in New Zealand, in early childhood, primary and secondary schooling and in te reo Māori and English language settings. The board that governs the Teaching Council is expected to ensure the organisation is doing its job well and supporting the teaching profession to improve practices.
The board has 7 elected and 6 appointed members and MILG have a relationship with the team who are supporting the Minister to consider what the Teaching Council needs in terms of a good mix of skills and expertise. An outline of the Board’s roles and responsibilities is linked here. The elected members for the new board have been decided and information about them can be found here.
Next steps
In addition to names for consideration, the Minister is welcoming suggestions as to the important elements to consider when thinking about ākonga. This could be in Māori education system leadership, or a very high level of expertise or experience you feel is needed on the board.
Submit your interest to Ros.Coote@education.govt.nz by Monday 7 April 2025 or please get in touch with the MILG Lead Technician if you have any pātai. If you would like MILG to endorse your application please click here.
